Cale's Largely Forgettable Review of "Sonic and the Secret Rings"

Call me crazy, call me a fan of deep gameplay, but I've just never understood this whole Sonic the Hedgehog hullaballoo. Back when Sonic made his console debut in the early 90s he immediately separated himself from his biggest competitor, a chubby plumber, and in doing so, set himself apart as the "cool" console mascot. And cool he was. While Mario was busy breaking bricks and lollygagging his way through pipes, Sonic was flying through worlds with ease, doing all sorts of cool tricks in the process. However, what Mario lacked in "coolness" he always made up for with deep, addictive gameplay. Sonic was cool, yeah, but when it came down to the quality of the gaming experience, he just never could gain ground on that chubby guy.

This flaw of Sonic followed him into the 3D era as well. The arrival of the Sega Dreamcast brought Sonic fans the Sonic Adventure series, which often slowed down the speedy hedgehog in favor of more traditional 3D platforming. In a way, it worked. But this was Sonic, and you can't very well have Sonic and not have speed! So Sonic the Hedgehog has been in sort of a drought over the better part of a decade, trying his best to keep up in his old age. Often plagued by poor camera control and even poorer character control, Sega's mascot is no longer the poster child for "cool" gaming, but the perfect example of what a video game shouldn't be.

The light at the end of the tunnel for Sonic was supposed to be his latest adventure, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and at first look, it seems like a pretty solid idea. Bring Sonic back to his roots, make him fast, recreate the 2D Sonic experience in 3D. So the folks over at Sega have Sonic constantly moving in this game along a set path, the player steers him left and right by tilting the Wii remote accordingly. To jump, simply hit the 2 button. Shove the remote forward mid-air to perform a homing attack (a gesture that really feels quite solid).
So far so good. Sonic is once again running through worlds, collecting rings and other valuables while blasting into enemies. But then the core flaw of Sonic the Hedgehog once again becomes apparant. The gameplay is still pretty shallow. Sega has tried to paint over this problem by allowing Sonic to gain experience points throughout his adventure, making him faster, stronger, and more cocky. Still, this is 2007. Running fast and collecting rings may have been compelling, or jaw dropping in 1991, but we've come to expect more from our games nowadays, especially when they're platformers. Sadly, Sonic and the Secret Rings does not recreate the excitement and experience of the traditional Sonic game, nor does it create a new experience to get excited about. It's simply disappointing.

However, from a visual standpoint, Sonic and the Secret Rings does not disappoint. You won't find the benefits of high definition gaming as you would Sonic's other current-generation endeavors. But what Sonic and the Secret Rings lacks in polish and shine, it makes up for in beauty and detail. The worlds that Sonic speeds through are beautifully and meticulously created, often giving players something to gawk at when the game slows its pace occasionally. Having played Sonic the Hedgehog on Xbox 360, I can safely say that Sonic and the Secret Rings is a much more satisfying game where both visuals and gameplay are concerned.

In the end, the gamers will decide if Sonic and the Secret Rings is a hit or a miss. Sonic fans of old may enjoy the new twist on the old gameplay, but fans who never really latched on to the series will most likely be disappointed again. Is it the best 3D Sonic game? It really depends on what you're looking for. As a traditional 3D platformer it fails, but in recreating the 2D world of Sonic in 3D it at least comes close. Sonic may not be as cool as he used to be, but at least he's trying.

I'd say Sonic Heroes was pretty good. I think it may have been what was looked for as a "3-D Reenactment of the good ol' Genesis days." Not focusing on the plot, much. But, instead, making great level design, cool places and the bright, classicness we've all come to love. It was just the sort of "Battle Segments" where you have to defeat the enemies to continue from this point that some might find annoying. But it's not so bad as that of Sonic World Adventure's Night Stages. If they did something like combine Sonic Adventure's originality and "True Endless Possibility", Sonic Adventure 2's gameplay and good story-writing with Sonic Heores' brightness and classic feel, it could surely be a hit. What might be even better is if one day, they might make a Wi-Fi Sonic game that allows fans to create their own Sonic games and send them for others (including the company) to play via the Wi-Fi, it's surely be a hit. Especially if Sega and Sonic Team would use the very ideas of the games to create what we've all been waiting for since Everything went downhill. Something else that might be rather intriguing would be if they used something like the Ratchet & Clank games as reference. I mean, just look at how successful those games have been: A 10/10 average! Why? Because of amazing level design, detail, humor, gameplay, plot, acting and just downright everything! Give Sonic one year and he gets Sonic and the Black Knight. Give Ratchet one year and you've got yourself Up your Arsenal! So, take a Ratchet & Clank game, replace the weapons with the classic high-speed action and the roller coaster and pinball like stages and bring it all to Planet Mobias (With Sonic characters instead of the R&C characters) and you've got yourself the greatest thing in the gaming universe. That's what I'd love to see someday. That's Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog.

Really? Is that what you think? You take one look at an honest review with good effort and then make a complete fool of yourself? Sonic Heroes was one of the best Sonic games ever made. I really fail to see what hate people see in it. It's got the gameplay we've been clamoring for since... I dunno... since we wanted better gameplay. It's got high-speed, awesome animations, cool movesets, awesome and controllable attacks and is virtually flawless. It flows very nicely. It's just like a Genesis game. Plus, it's got a more oldschool taste to the last story.

Why do these brainless ones hate this game so much?

Story?
They didn't put much effort into the story. They didn't need to. It focused solely on the gameplay, done very much like the old days. Whereas Sonic unleashed had a horrible plot and they where all puffin' out their chests like "Look how awesome this piece of crap is!" So, even though there isn't much plot, at least it's not badly written. It's actually quite great. And it's nice to see how everyone handles the different stages and their side of "why are we going through 14 stages and fighting 7 bosses?"

Gameplay?
Like I said before, the gameplay is great. It's high-speed, none of those treasure hunts, no slow-speed shooting levels... and best of all... NO FISHING LEVELS! They're all the same kind of levels everyone likes best about the series. Plus, the themes are really good, too. A Good take on the classic "Green Place" areas, a futuristic city, a Casino metropolis, (nice one!) a Western base, very original, a Forest with giant rain-controlling frogs (froggy!), a haunted stage, 'bout time! Eggman's new main base? The classic last zone. So much fun! It's so great to just run around from ship to ship, building to building on a quest to stop Eggman once and for all! The giant stages of defeating evil right where it rests has always been fun! And Sonic just made it better... Three times better (well, technically, twelve)!

Acting?
Videogames haven't been much for acting. But it's still a lot better than neutral. Plus, the scenes between the levels can be rather interesting such as Team Dark's Pre-Robot-Carnival scene or Team Rose's Pre-Hang-Castle scene. Weather it's suspense or something that's just really funny, this game has it in just the right format! Plus, you should also be glad that it's one more game to feature Ryan Drummond in it!

So, really. There is absolutely nothing TERRIBLE about this game! On my top best list, it's #4 behind Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.

Overall, this is a great game for anyone who's been with the series for a while, as their first game or just someone who started liking Sonic games a while ago. Whoever you are, you can bet this is a good game and you're gonna have a blast going through here as you are mercilessly catapulted miles into the air and blazing across the ground to your goal at supersonic speed!

In fact, this is the most desired Sonic game to have a sequel! Now, that, I can't wait for!
